wisconsin veterans memorial riverwalk - delafield, wi
During a recent winter warm-up, I took a short drive to Delafield to explore the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Riverwalk along the Bark River. The boardwalk begins at St. John's Pond, next to the Delafield Fish Hatchery building, and winds along the river over wetland and marsh. The boardwalk exits at Cushing Memorial Park, where you can loop around on the opposite side of the river and take a nature trail back to the Bark River Bridge and Liberty Park. Featured along the trail are nine separate war memorial sites, honoring veterans service in all wars with monuments, and educational kiosks illustrating the history of each war.
On this particularly nice winter day, there were Mallard ducks swimming in the river, a Canada Goose ambling around, and I even spotted a Blue Heron doing a bit of fishing. No doubt this is a great birdwatching spot come springtime.
There is a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail that winds through downtown Delafield as well, and connects to Lapham Peak State Park.
Parking can be found at Cushing Memorial Park at the west end, and in the lot next to the Delafield Fish Hatchery building at the east end of the trail.
Location: 400 Main Street, Delafield, WI (Waukesha County)
