Lyons park - Milwaukee, WI
Neighborhood parks are some of my favorite green treasures. They may not be large in scope, but within their boundaries you will often find a wooded trail, a quiet bench to rest on, a children's playground, a creek, a butterfly garden, the sights and sounds of wild birds, and common critters like squirrels and chipmunks. Lyons Park is just one of those treasures.
I recently stopped there for the first time on a mild winter afternoon for a nature walk. I was pleased to find paved trails, plowed of snow, a running creek, lots of trees, and the sounds of birds singing in the yet bare branches. What a lovely little park!
The park is 12.9 acres of green, located on Milwaukee's south side. It was named for Willard P. Lyons, a member of the Milwaukee County Board from 1924 to 1954. Here you will find a children's playground and wading pool, an informal softball field, an easy walking trail (the outer loop is about .4 miles), and a park pavilion, which is available for rentals. Something tells me this park will be a nice bird watching spot come spring migration. I intend to find out.
