blue heron wildlife sanctuary - Saukville
I was on the way back from a trip to Sheboygan, and decided to stop for a bit of nature in the fading afternoon. It was near dusk when I arrived at Blue Heron Wildlife Sanctuary. It was quiet. A few other visitors walking in the field across the way. Other than that, I was alone. This was my first visit to the sanctuary, so, after a brief look at the map, I took the trail down to Turtle Pond. The path, to the east of the visitor's center, is limestone, and leads to a short boardwalk and to the deck along the pond. The path, walkway, and deck are wheelchair accessible.
Turtle Pond was a lovely scene as the light was fading. I walked beyond the pond to some prairie and woodland trails, but it was getting too dark to head down to the Milwaukee River. That would have to wait for another time. But the moon was rising as I was leaving and it made for a few pretty camera shots, especially as it rose above the birch trees.
The sanctuary is 92 acres of land along the Milwaukee River. It was established by local resident, Sally Stefaniak, whose love of animals prompted her to establish their homestead as a sanctuary after the passing of her husband, Michael. The sanctuary would be a place for native wildlife, trees, and plants, to live undisturbed. Some of Sally's family members still help to maintain the grounds today.
The sanctuary includes Turtle Pond, a picnic area with shelter, and borders the Milwaukee River, with spots to put in canoes or kayaks.
Wildlife often seen here are: eagles, fox, wild turkey, rabbits, raccoons, owls, herons, and at dusk, deer can often be seen in the north field. It's a great spot for birding as well. There are several trails throughout the property for hiking, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing. I've no doubt it looks lovely covered in snow.
Location: 4030 High O, Saukville, WI (Ozaukee County)
