simmons woods park - pewaukee, wi
Simmons Woods Park is 50 acres of trails, woodland, and marsh within the Pewaukee River Watershed. The longest walking trail is a 1.5 mile loop that includes an 800 foot boardwalk through wetlands. The walking trails are slightly hilly, but easy enough. They can be a bit mucky this time of year, so sturdy shoes would serve you well.
The boardwalk through the wetlands features educational signage describing the geology of the area, the wildlife, and plant life as well. One of the neatest features through the wetlands is the visible Blue Heron Rookery up in the distant trees. This is a great spot for viewing nesting Blue Herons during the summer season. Even at this time of year you can spot the nests themselves that have been built in the tops of the trees.
One other notable feature within the wetlands is the Lookout Tree. A tall, branchy, dead tree. Birds perch atop this tree all summer long watching over the wetlands and woodlands. The benefits of trees far outlast their living days. It makes a dramatic picture as well.
The parking lot area is small and holds about 5-6 cars. There is a small shelter at the entrance.
Location: 889 Cecelia Drive, Pewaukee, WI (Waukesha County)
