Wequiock Falls Park - Green Bay, WI
On the way to Door County recently, I opted to take Hwy 41 north, which met up with Hwy 57 in Green Bay. This gave me the opportunity to stop at a local favorite spot - Wequiock Falls Park. The park was just the thing to break up a three-hour drive to my first Door County destination of Sturgeon Bay. I pulled in to the parking lot, and noted the signage leading to the falls.
It's a small park, and the walk to and back from the waterfall is a short one. Easy, not counting the stairs down to the inner basin of the waterfall. Those are a little slippery, but manageable. There are not trails at the bottom to get you to the waterfall itself. Just rocks to walk across. It's not treacherous, but plan on getting your feet wet if the water is in a generous state. It was pretty shallow the day I went, so the waterfall itself was trickling down. On a hot dry day it was a bit cooler in the basin, but not much splashing going on.
It was remarkably pretty, however. A pair of least flycatchers were flying back and forth, sitting on branches suspended over the area. Colorful graffiti art decorates the wall beneath the staircase. The 25-foot high surrounding walls are actually part of the Niagara Escarpment, and offer a unique view of the layers of dolomitic limestone that make up this geological wonder.
You need not walk all the way down to the waterfall basin. There is a viewing area at the bottom of the first set of steps. The fence there is decorated with all sorts of interesting locks left by visitors. They make an interesting photo op in addition to the falls themselves.
There is signage near the parking lot detailing the history of the area, picnic tables, a small open-air shelter, and a restroom. All a welcome respite to a long drive. If you're heading in that direction, it's a worthy stop.
