forest exploration center - wauwatosa, WI
The Forest Exploration Center is one of my favorite types of natural spaces. An oasis of forest in the middle of a wide urban environment.
Surrounded by city life on all sides, the Forest Exploration Center is 60 acres of mature hardwood forest, and showcases one of the best lasting southern hardwood forests in southeastern Wisconsin. I recently made my first visit here, and it did not disappoint!
With over 25 species of trees, including large oak, and maple, the forest is also host to more than 158 species of birds that feed, nest, and migrate through each spring and fall. If you're a birder, you have to visit! Here you will also find an array of native shrubs, and wildflowers growing in the understory of the woods, and the surrounding prairie. Dragonflies, bees, butterflies, grasshoppers, and other wildlife abound as well.
The Forest Exploration Center was originally founded in 2009, and is dedicated to sustainable forestry, education, and accessible recreation for all. It is the official steward for the forest and formal partner of the Wisconsin DNR Division of Forestry.
The main trail here is a one-mile, all-accessible, crushed gravel loop. Along the Forest Ecology Trail you will find educational signs that share information on the types of trees, flowers, and wildlife you will see here. Dogs are welcome, however, they must remain on-leash, at no longer than a 6-foot distance. The trail here is for foot traffic, wheelchair, and strollers only. There is parking on-site.
Further projects, workshops, and developments are ongoing. For more information, visit www.forestexplorationcenter.org.
