Vernon Marsh Wildlife Area - Mukwonago, WI
I journeyed to the Vernon Marsh Wildlife Area in early spring in search of migrating birds. Though it was brisk and windy upon my first visit, I did manage to spot many birds, and some waterfowl. Song sparrows, an Eastern Bluebird, Canada Geese, Grackles, Cranes, a Kinglet, Red-wing Blackbirds. A fair sighting for early spring.
The marsh itself is expansive. The trail follows a circle around the marsh. Big enough that I didn't take the entire trail. More to explore another day. The parking lot for the marsh is at the end of Frog Alley Road, east of Hwy 83. There are two parking lots. One on the north side, one on the south. Though the marsh trail I took is south of the southern parking lot.
Dogs are allowed, however, from April 15 to July 31, all dogs must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet. All visitors must clean up after their dogs.
The marsh is available for bird watching, hiking, and hunting of turkey, waterfowl and deer in season, as well as fishing, canoeing, boating (no gas motors except on Fox River), cross country skiing and snowmobiling in season. Note that the marsh is closed to all other activities other than deer hunting from September 1 through November 30th.
There are no restrooms on site.
Location: East of Hwy 83, on Frog Alley Road (at the end of the road), Mukwonago, WI (Waukesha County)
