Joyce M. Baer & George J. Socha Conservancy - Marshall, WI
In a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 14, 2021, the newest nature preserve in Dane County was presented to the public. At 140 acres, the Joyce M. Baer & George J. Socha Nature Conservancy was gifted to the county and the public by George Socha and Joyce M. Baer in 2007, in a life estate, and officially turned over in 2019.
Since that time they have added a parking lot, trail signage, and developed the first nature trail for hiking, bird watching, canoeing, and foraging for nuts, berries, and mushrooms. Additional hiking trails, pedestrian bridges, prairie and woodland restorations, and a second parking lot are in the plans for the future.
For now, the hiking trails (just under two miles) traverse the edges of the agricultural fields and the woodlands, passing cornfields, and following along the path of the Maunesha River. The most accessible point of the river that we could find had a bench for sitting and taking in the view, though this late in the summer, the river is fairly stagnant, with much green algae. Still, a scenic spot.
The walk through the woodland trail is short, but scenic, and should prove to be lovely with autumn color. With the river nearby, it should make for good bird watching as well. The best view of the river is near the property line that leads towards the private residence still in use on the land. It's a nice view, even from a distance.
Thanks to the generosity of George and Joyce, the Conservancy will remain a natural space for humans and wildlife to enjoy for future generations. I look forward to seeing how it evolves over the coming years.
The Conservancy is open daily, 5am to 10pm.
Dogs are permitted, but must be on-leash.
There are no amenities on-site.
Location: 5784 Cherry Lane, Marshall, WI (Dane County)
