Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy - Williams Bay, WI
Celebrating over 30 years of nature conservation and education, the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy is a gift to generations. A community based project, the preserve opened in July, 1990, and features over 4 miles of trails that traverse this 231-acre paradise. Walk the trails to experience the plants, trees, waters, and wildlife of this natural habitat. Additional features include a boardwalk, viewing tower, a pavilion/picnic shelter, 65-plus acres of restored prairie, and a 15-acre arboretum.
Our first visit to the preserve, several years ago, was on a cold and overcast March day, with a hint at the seasons to come. Subsequent visits include a hike through during spring migration with an abundance of migrating birds singing from the treetops. Summer is filled with color, with plants and wildflowers in bloom, and nesting birds busy all season. Fall has it's own beauty, with changing leaves, and wild sunflowers. It's not unusual to spot a flock of wild turkeys roaming the grounds. Two creeks, Harris and Southwick, travel through Kishwauketoe wetlands, feeding into Geneva Lake.
Events are held at the preserve throughout the year, including a "Kish Kids" program, moonlit hikes, an annual 5k run, and more. No matter the season, the conservancy is a beautiful place to spend some time enjoying nature. Dogs are allowed, but must be on-leash, and cleaned up after.
