Kurth Park - Muskego, WI
Muskego has a great parks department. I've profiled several of them for the website. It was time to visit another - Kurth Park. The park is located just a few minutes from Janesville Road, nestled in-between Belmont Drive and Woods Road.
The origins of the park reach back to 1978. Over the next four decades, the park evolved to include a multitude of family-friendly features including: two tennis courts, a baseball/softball field, a soccer field, basketball hoop, children's playground, and several picnic tables and park benches. A paved walking trail weaves through the park making the trek from the parking lot on Woods Road, to the lot on Belmont Drive. It's just about a half-mile one-way.
A conservation area was further developed in the past decade. Tess Corners Creek borders the park, along with woodlands and wetlands that frame the park perimeter. Two acres of native prairie habitat have been developed to buffer the creek, and to provide wildlife habitat.
On the sunny, yet chilly, early spring day I walked the paved trail, a bright red Cardinal sang his heart out from a tree branch above the creek. Chickadee and Downy Woodpecker calls could be heard, too. As I returned to my car, a small flock of Turkey Vultures soared overhead, another sign of spring. It seems to me this is a great neighborhood park for bird watching, in addition to all its other great features. So, take note, if that's your thing.
