STAVKIRKE - Washington Island, WI
I've wanted to see the Stavkirke on Washington Island since the first time I caught a glimpse of a photo of it somewhere. The architecture was old-world looking, and so intriguing. The Stavkirke was built partly as a tribute to the Scandinavian culture that found a home on the island, and in other parts of Door County.
The building is constructed with twelve 18-foot "stavs" or masts, using wood harvested on Washington Island. The concept of the structure was suggested during the 1980's by local pastor Reverend James Reiff. Beginning in earnest in 1992, the structure was completed by 1995, with landscaping and a bell tower installed by 1999.
The church is used year-round for special services, and as a place of quiet meditation for locals and visitors alike. A winding prayer path entrance, across from the more contemporary Trinity Lutheran church, leads you to a lovely forest grove that beautifully frames the church. The perfect spot for a bit of reverent contemplation.
