genesee oak opening and fen - mukwonago/north prairie, wi
Wisconsin is blessed with over 687 state natural areas. Some very wild, some with marked trails, all with natural beauty. We recently visited Genesee Oak Opening and Fen near Mukwonago/North Prairie. It's a popular state natural area located in Waukesha County. At 50 acres, this natural area includes a classic bur oak opening, prairie, and wetlands. Genesee Creek flows through the site.
There aren't marked trails here, but the road that leads in becomes a walking trail as you pass the site gate. I did not see any trails through the prairie or wetlands. We spotted a tree along the creek that showed the detailed handiwork of a beaver. Sandhill Cranes and a White Egret could be seen among the wetlands. Red-wing Blackbirds called from the trees. There was not much in bloom yet, but wildflowers and uncommon plant species can be found here in late spring and summer.
One of the curiosities here is the old home ruins at the top of the wooded hill. The hike up the hill is arduous, but not really difficult. Once at the top you will find the ruins of an old cabin. The concrete foundation remains, along with the original stone fireplace. Located atop the hill the cabin had a scenic view of the surrounding prairie and wetlands.
Bird watchers, hikers, and hunters will enjoy this peaceful space.
There are no facilities on site. State Park stickers are not required.
Location: Genesee Road/Hwy 59 in Mukwonago/North Prairie, WI (Waukesha County)
Follow the road in to the gate. There is parking space for only two vehicles (at best).
