Ned Hollister Wetlands Conservancy - Delavan, WI
The Ned Hollister Wetlands Conservancy is 9 acres of recently revived nature trails in Delavan. Named for Ned Hollister, a Delavan native who went on, eventually, to be the superintendent of the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. From early on, Ned had a keen interest in birds, and wrote an early edition of The Birds of Wisconsin in 1903.
The trail for the conservancy begins just beyond, and to the left, of the Spring Grove Cemetery main building. There are small trail markers along the way. Eventually, the trail leads to an opening that borders Lake Comus, though, as far as I could tell, it didn't go any further. We turned around and followed the same trail back. The trail borders along Spring Grove Cemetery, and is peppered with wildflowers, lots of trees, and is a good birding spot. The day we were there a blue heron could be seen sitting quietly atop a tree branch just a ways across the lake.
Location: (bordering Spring Grove Cemetery) N. 7th Street, Delavan, WI (Walworth County)
