humboldt park - milwaukee, wi
I took a walk this sunny Tuesday afternoon at Humboldt Park. The park is a 73-acre gem in the Bay View neighborhood. It is one of the first six parks created by the City of Milwaukee parks commission after being established in 1890. It was originally named South Park, and opened in 1891. The park was originally 45 acres, and evolved over time to the 73-acre multi-faceted park it is today.
Todays Humboldt Park offers a wide range of activities for residents. Paved walking trails, a lagoon that offers fishing in season, and ice skating in winter, a sledding hill, too. A park pavilion, a band shell, a beer garden, baseball field, tennis court, a children's wading pool and play area. Picnic tables and benches are scattered throughout the park.
The park has an inviting atmosphere. Yarn-bombed park benches add color to the walking paths. Spring brings an abundance of Red-winged Blackbirds, and they sing from the grasses and reeds in the pond and lagoon. They were setting up at the band shell for "Chill on the Hill", a free summer concert series that takes place on Tuesday evenings, accompanied by local food and drink truck vendors. Other events are scheduled at the park and beer garden throughout the year. Check out the events schedule for more details.
If you're looking for a charming spot to spend an afternoon, this is the place.
