petersen island woods preserve - elkhorn, wi
There's a lot of natural beauty in Walworth County. Petersen Island Woods Preserve certainly brings it. This 40-acre preserve at Lauderdale Lakes, north of Elkhorn, offers peaceful, lush, green wooded trails, and plenty of bird life. Nestled in-between Green Lake and Middle Lake, it's a lovely spot for an afternoon hike. The trails aren't especially long, but they can be somewhat hilly.
I saw several deer during my hike here, and was serenaded by the calls of American Robins, Blue-jays, Eastern Wood Peewee, Goldfinches, Nuthatches, and a Hairy Woodpecker. The topography here was originally formed by glacial activity. There are several visible deep kettles within the woods. You can have a seat on the resident Leopold bench and take in the view of one of the biggest kettles in the preserve.
The preserve is managed by Kettle Moraine Land Trust, and is one of several preserves they maintain in the area.
Location: Oak Park Rd, Elkhorn, WI / Lauderdale Lakes (Walworth County)
The preserve is located at the east end of Oak Park Rd (going past the Lauderdale Landing restaurant).
