MARGIE'S GARDEN - Hales Corners, WI
Margie's Garden is a colorful, flower-laden wonderland for kids. This gift to Boerner Botanical Garden's wish list, is a memorial to Margaret "Margie" Kezman, a local teacher who died in May, 2019. Tim Kezman, Margie's husband, and their children, felt strongly that they wanted to memorialize Margie in a way that would honor her dedication to her students, and provide something special for future generations.
Tim met with Ellen Hayward, the President/CEO of Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens to discuss what that something special would be. On the long-term wish list for the Gardens, was a children's garden. That wish is now a reality. Margie's Garden opened to the public in early July, 2022. The gardens are all-accessible, and accommodate wheelchairs and strollers.
I recently spent an afternoon in the Gardens with my 4-year old nephew and his mom. He thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the favorite features were the playhouses, twig huts, and instrument displays. The playground and slide, alphabet and number gardens were highlights as well. The stage area was intriguing, and the dirt digging display was a heap of fun.
The larger than life flower sculptures add color and whimsy, as butterflies and bees buzz about the blooms throughout. A reading library is featured in the Enchanted Village, so kids can relax with a good book in the playhouse, or on a wooden stump seat. There are benches for resting and reading in the Secret Garden, as well. We easily spent over two hours in the garden, imaginations thoroughly entertained.
Admission to the garden is included with a regular Boerner Botanical Garden admission. Kids 4 and under can visit for free.
Hours: May 1 - October 30, Daily: 8am to 7pm - for more details on Admission/Hours, click here.
Donations towards the maintenance of the gardens can be made through Margie's Smile Inc.
