hawthorn glen - Milwaukee, wi
Hawthorn Glen is 25 acres of educational green space in Milwaukee. Owned by MPS, and used as an Outdoor Education Center and Nature Museum, it serves the students of Milwaukee area schools. Over 12,000 students enjoy the educational programs and field trips that are offered throughout the year.
The Glen is home to woodland, prairie, fen, and pond. There is a 3/4 mile nature-trail winding through and around the glen, enjoyed by locals who walk, jog, and run the trail. There are cross-country ski trails in winter as well.
Though it was early spring when I visited, there were a few migrant birds bathing in the pond. Red-wing Blackbirds could be heard singing from the trees. I even spotted a Common Grackle preening on a tree branch post-bath.
The glen is home to many native wild animals, and plants. Walk the trail and you will find a pollinator garden with its own beehive, a prairie garden, a pond, a woodland trail, a wetland area, and picnic areas. Due to the Covid-19 shutdown, however, Hawthorn Glen is currently closed to visitors. Though there is plenty to learn here year-round, it should be quite green by the time the shutdown passes.
