jackson park - milwaukee, WI
A mild and sunny Christmas Day was perfect for our first walk at Jackson Park. Well, my first, actually. My husband grew up nearby, and Jackson Park was a popular recreation spot for him and his family. Bike riding the paths, summer swim lessons, ice skating on the lagoon in winter. There's plenty to do here.
At 113 acres, the park includes a nicely paved walking trail around the expansive lagoon (about a half-mile), some short woodland trails, tennis courts, basketball court, football field, a tot lot, and, of course, the swimming pool. Something for all seasons. There are reservable picnic areas, a park pavilion, and plenty of street parking in the surrounding blocks.
The lagoon itself is lovely. Fishing is permitted in the lagoon. I'm anxious to see it blanketed in a soft fall of snow. I expect it is a popular spring migration spot, so fellow birders be aware.
Update: Took a walk here on a sunny late October day...how beautiful! The fall colors surrounding the lagoon, and along the walking trails were spectacular. Newly arrived Juncos chipped and flew from tree to tree as I walked along, fallen leaves crunching underfoot. If you're looking for a walk full of autumn vibes, Jackson Park is a good bet!
Hours: Open daily, 6am - 10pm.
Dogs are permitted, on-leash and must be cleaned up after.
Location: 3500 W. Forest Home Avenue, Milwaukee (Milwaukee County)
