seno woodland center - burlington, wi
I've been meaning to visit the Seno Woodland Center for over a year. I finally got there this week. Though it's only about a 45 minute drive from Milwaukee, I ran into some traffic detours on the way there, and was feeling really stressed by the time I arrived (signs say the road construction enroute will be done by end of July). But once I had parked, grabbed my gear, and started on the woodland trail, my stresses disappeared. What a beautiful place!
The SENO Woodland Center is 130 acres of woodland and prairie, open to the public daily (dawn to dusk). There are 2.8 miles of well marked main trails through the woodlands and a large prairie trail. There are an additional 2.9 miles of other trails and fire brakes. I stuck to the main trails on my visit. They can be hilly at times. There are a wide variety of trees here, Red and White Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Black Cherry, Maple. Wildflowers blooming on the prairie are a sight to see, and there is plenty of bird life as well. On my walk I encountered House Wren, White Breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Robins, Cardinals, as well as a few others that I heard, but did not see. There is also a boardwalk bordering a Tamarack Bog, and a wildlife viewing area.
There is an education center on site, with facilities available for rental as well. There is a picnic shelter adjacent to the trail entrance and parking lot. Dogs are permitted, but must remain on leash, and cleaned up after. Admission is free, however, donations and membership purchases are welcome.
The Center is beautiful in summer, but the coming seasons will prove to be beautiful on sight as well. If you're looking for a bit of nature, and a short day trip, visit this beautiful conservancy. You won't regret it.
The Center is managed by Seno K/RLT (Kenosha/Racine Land Trust), and is one of many other preserves within the area.
HUNTING SEASON UPDATE 10-6-2022: Trails will be closed to visitors from November 13 to November 27. Only their volunteer hunters will be permitted at Seno Woodland Center during the week before and after Thanksgiving.
Location: 3606 Dyer Lake Road, Burlington, WI (Kenosha County)
