Wadewitz Nature camp - village of rochester, WI
We went in search of a Pileated Woodpecker that had been spotted there, but we didn't find it. What we did find were some beautiful trails in a mix of prairie, woodlands, and wildflowers. Lots of Eastern Bluebirds, butterflies, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, and Song Sparrows, too. It was certainly worth the trip. Pileated or not.
Wadewitz Nature Camp is 168 acres of wild, natural beauty, nestled in-between surrounding gravel pits and an industrial park. In the late 60's it belonged to the Boy Scouts Council, and was named Camp Ka Ha Gon. The Boy Scouts often camped here, in all seasons. Eventually, the property was purchased by the W.R. Wadewitz Foundation, who, in turn, donated the land to Racine County in 1982, with the explicit condition that it remain in a rustic, natural state, and be accessible only on foot. Hiking and cross-country skiing trails are featured here. Bird-watching is great here as well.
The agreement also required that the Boy Scouts, and other youth organizations would always be allowed to use the camp for hiking, and for year-round camping. The camp was then named for W.R. Wadewitz.
There are facilities available to rent for non-profit organizations. Arrangements must be made by phone at 262.886.8440.
The grounds are open to all daily, 6am to 10pm.
Some picnic benches are available. Pit Toilets are available on site.
Location:2716 Buena Park Road, Rochester, WI (Racine County)
