Beulah Bog - East Troy, WI
Beulah Bog is owned by the Wisconsin DNR, and was first designated a State Natural Area in 1975. The walking trail in is a bit hilly. In muddy or snowy weather I'd recommend sturdy shoes, even a walking stick. The trail leads to a rustic stairway that will take you to the boardwalk, which travels out among tamarack trees and bog shrubs, moss, and several rare plant species. Once you reach the small lake, the boardwalk loops back around for the return trip. It's not a long trail. In and back are probably about a mile.
We went in search of a Pileated Woodpecker that had been spotted there, but we didn't find it. What we did find were some beautiful trails in a mix of prairie, woodlands, and wildflowers. Lots of eastern bluebirds, butterflies, cedar waxwings, robins, and sparrows, too. It was certainly worth the trip. Pileated or not.
Parking: Parking Lot On-site
Hours: Open Daily
Fees: State Park Sticker Required
Location: Stringers Bridge Road (north of Beulah Heights Road), East Troy, WI (Walworth County)
