flowing well - whitewater, wi
My friend, Michelle, recently told me about an Artesian Well in Whitewater that offered free, and tasty, cold clear spring water. You just need to bring your own containers. I was intrigued, and I knew I would have to go check it out.
So, this past Sunday, my friend, Candy, and I made the drive to Whitewater, and we found it. Just off the side of Clover Valley Road, the large rocky stone well spilled forth, from tw0 spigots, cold, clear, spring water. Surrounded by farm land, there were few parking spots, maybe five, and most of them were full. Clearly this was a popular spot! I set about taking some pictures of the cozy picnic spot carved out just beyond the well, and we waited our turn to fill up.
The Flowing Well has been in existence since 1895 when Adam Channing originally dug it. The original depth was 55'. Adam was 14 years old when he arrived in the United States from Taunton, England, with his parents in 1885. He labored on farm drainage projects, was a Whitewater volunteer fireman for 48 years, and lived in Whitewater until his death in 1954. It's amazing to think that the drinking well first realized by a 24-year old immigrant, serves the public still, 127 years later.
The land accompanying the well was provided by Vinton Anderson, a local Whitewater farmer. The picnic shelter was sponsored by the Kiwanis Breakfast Club, and maintenance to the site, including regular water testing, is managed by the Whitewater Town Board.
Lots of cyclists stop at the well to refill their water bottles, along with hikers visiting the Ice Age Trail nearby, or other nearby parks and trails. Folks appear to come from all over to load up their water jugs with this refreshing elixir.
The spring runs freely in all four seasons. The well, and parking, is very close to the road, so just a word of caution.
Location: Clover Valley Road (GPS: 42.798925,-88.715157), Whitewater, WI (Walworth County)
