Aztalan State Park - Aztalan, WI
For years I've been westbound on I-94 and passed by the signs for Aztalan State Park. This year I finally made time to visit. I'm so glad that I did. The park spans 172 acres along the Crawfish River. The grounds are surrounded by a wall of logs set vertically into the ground. These ruins were once settled (around the year 900) by a Native American culture known as the Middle Mississippian Tradition. The park, which features three remaining pyramid-shaped platform mounds, was declared a Wisconsin State Park in 1952. Further to that, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. Educational tours are given by the Friends of Aztalan State Park.
The park features many walking trails, plenty of flowers, plants, trees, birds, and wildlife. There are two spots for putting in with a canoe or kayak. For more history on the park, click here.
