Lac Lawrann Conservancy - West Bend, WI
Lac Lawrann Conservancy history begins most recently in 1955 when Lawrence and Ann Maurin purchased 18 acres of land including a spur easement and pond naming it Lac Lawrann. They devoted countless hours to clearing the property of junk, and improving the habitat. Over the next two decades, the Maurin's built their retirement home at Lac Lawrann and continued their work on the property. In 1979 they donated the property to the City of West Bend as a wildlife and conservancy area.
Barely outside the city limits, the conservancy offers 136 acres of abundant nature for use by the public. There are multiple hiking trails, picnic areas, a nature center, buildings for rent for special meetings or events, educational programs, and summer day camps. There have been over 200 species of birds documented at Lac Lawrann. Other wildlife spotted here in the forest and prairie include deer, squirrel, beaver, mink, muskrat, and badgers. The day we were there, we spotted a tree showing the signs of hard work done by a beaver. I wonder will the tree still be there when I go back...
