ProHealth Care Park - New Berlin, WI
If you're anything like me, you've driven past ProHealth Care Park many times. There always seems to be someone out walking the trails there, so I've been curious. When the sun finally came back out again this week, I decided to visit the park and check it out for myself. Turns out, there are several great features at this 23-acre New Berlin community park.
At the entrance you'll find plenty of parking, a park shelter building (two, actually), and a children's playground. The paved walking trails wind through the park and past several sports fields: baseball, soccer, and basketball. There is a short storybook for kids walking path at the beginning of the walking trail, generously sponsored by the Friends of New Berlin Public Library. Educational signage continues along the main walking path.
The walking trail clocks in at just under a mile for the complete route. You'll walk past the pond near the entrance, and cross two short wooden boardwalks over wetlands. A wide variety of trees, bushes, and grasses fill out the natural areas, with birds scurrying in and out of shelter from the winter cold.
The signs here said the trail is closed for snow season, and will not be maintained, so proceed at your own risk. Currently the ground is dry, save for a few icy patches. In full snow, I would recommend sturdy boots and a walking stick, or Yaktrax. Something tells me some of the icy patches can be a bit tricky based on the way the walking path rises and falls. Nothing too strenuous, but best to be cautious if you do choose to walk here in the winter months.
There are plenty of evergreens, crabapples, and serviceberry trees. Park benches, too. This should be a great spot for a bit of bird watching in the spring. And if you're into sports, there's plenty of space for that, too.
Amenities: Restrooms available in season
Parking: Parking lot available
Shelter: Open shelter buildings near the parking lot
Hours: In season, 6 am to 10 pm
Location: 2950 S. Sunny Slope Road, New Berlin, WI (Waukesha County)
