Bay Beach Sanctuary - Green Bay, WI
The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is a 600 acre urban wildlife refuge in Green Bay. It's long history of development began in 1936 when it was established as a small site for waterfowl rehabilitation. Since that time it's growth has been sure and steady as additional land was acquired, more habitats were developed, and an educational program was implemented to bridge the connection between wildlife and the general public. You can read more about the history of the sanctuary here. The day we visited the sanctuary was a rainy day in late March. Fortuitously, the rain let up as we reached the sanctuary and began our tour. Admission to the sanctuary is free, but donations are happily accepted. We spent a lot of time in the waterfowl and raptor area where a resident American Eagle and a red-tailed hawk reside. We also spotted a wild juvenile eagle perched on a tree overlooking the lake. In addition to the wildlife rescued and in residence, Bay Beach is a popular birding spot, particularly during spring and fall migration. Canadian Geese find it a fine home to nest and raise their goslings. I can see why.
