Carlin-Weld County Park - Palmyra, WI
When I think about the Southern Kettle Moraine Forest, I generally think of State Parks and Nature Trails. But there are plenty of other bits of nature to enjoy as well. Local and county parks in the towns spanning from the Southern to the Northern Kettle Moraine have lots to offer. Carlin-Weld County Park is one such local park.
Located in Palmyra, not far from Paradise Springs Nature Trail, and the Emma Carlin Trailhead, Carlin-Weld County Park is 78 acres, set within the uplands and kettles of the Kettle Moraine. Woodland walking trails, a children's playground, picnic areas, a rentable picnic shelter, and a disc golf course are just some of the offerings here.
Down the hill from the main picnic area and parking lot, is a charming man-made pond, perfect for fishing. Ice fishing is an option here, though I didn't spot anyone ice fishing during my visit. The pond was pretty frozen at the time. One of the walking trails along the pond takes you through some woodlands, and out the other side. An easy walk, and scenic, too. The sounds of Chickadees and woodpeckers are plentiful along the trail. Expect some good bird watching at the pond come spring. Plenty of deer tracks could be seen in the leftover snow along the trail. I even spotted a pair running through the trees on one of the hills. I wasn't quick enough to get a photo, though.
Disc golf here features an 18-hole course. Currently, it's free to play. I'm not a disc golf player, but the course seems to be set up nicely among the hills and valleys of the park and the woodlands. Snowshoeing, sledding, and model aircraft flying, are additional activities allowed in the park.
