ledge county park - horicon, wi
I've made many trips to Horicon over the years, most often to visit Horicon Marsh. On the way to the marsh we often pass signs for Ledge County Park. This time we made the trip to Horicon specifically to visit Ledge County Park, and it was so worth the effort!
The park is 82 acres, and lies along the Niagara Escarpment. This natural rock ledge divides the park into upper and lower areas, and, from the upper ledge, provides stunning views of the not too distant Horicon Marsh. Views of the beautiful area can be seen from both the upper and lower ledges.
The ledges themselves, are amazing rock formations, and, on this spring day, were incredibly lush with trees, plants, and vegetation. I was in awe of the ferns, mosses, and Wild Columbine, that adorned the cavernous rock. On a steamy summer day, a walk among the ledges can offer the comfort of cooler temperatures. The ledge trails are quite rocky, and a bit tricky at times, so good hiking shoes are a must. The upper-most scenic lookout has its own parking lot, and a new all-accessible boardwalk and deck for taking in the view. Three other hiking trails make their way through woodlands, and circle back to the campground area.
The park offers picnic sites, and 45 camp sites, with nearby showers. Both 30 amp, and non-electric sites are available. Grills, shelters, and picnic tables are available. There are pit toilets along some of the trails. A playground is available on the lower level, and volleyball facilities on the upper level.
