honey creek park - west allis, wi
Located at the corner of 84th and National in West Allis, Honey Creek Park is a 3.7 acre City of West Allis park. This popular neighborhood park features brick walking paths, a small sport field, picnic tables, and a gazebo. Even free wi-fi is available on-site.
The West Allis Historical Society and Museum resides here, in what was originally the Greenfield Township's Fifth District School. Built in 1887 with cream city brick, the museum features two stories filled with historical details, recreations, exhibits, and memorabilia of the beginnings of West Allis. The museum is generally open on Sundays, from 2-4pm, and Tuesday evenings, from 7-9pm. Admission is free.
There are historic monuments throughout the park, an old stone bridge, and an old school house on display. Signs are posted throughout the park depicting the history of the park and the City of West Allis.
Another notable feature of the park, is that it is the home of Honey Creek Cemetery, which was first developed in April of 1849. There are over 500 graves at the cemetery, with many of the original grave markers and headstones remaining, though they are worn and in disrepair.
West Allis is hoping to repair many of the headstones, and improve the state of this historic cemetery. A gofundme has been set up to facilitate restoration at the cemetery: Help The Honey Creek Cemetery. Volunteers are also welcome.
Some of the trees located throughout the park include Linden, Norway Maple, Spruce, Pin Oak, and Cedar. One of the highlights are the gardens at the entrance to the Historical Society. At the height of summer, the colorful blooms are themselves a worthy attraction.
Have a seat on one of the park benches and enjoy the blooming view.
There are no restrooms on site.
Free Parking is available.
Dogs are welcome on-leash.
