Pulaski Park - Milwaukee, WI
When the warmth of spring finally arrives, it's a perfect time to visit Milwaukee's Pulaski Park. This 26-acre Milwaukee County Park, has undergone some major renovations in recent years. Located on the south side of Milwaukee, a transformed portion of the Kinnickinnic River flows through the park. Once housed in a cracked and broken concrete basin, MMSD restored it to a natural state, where it now provides prime natural habitat for native plants, trees, fish, and other wildlife. And a much safer, accessible view of the river for visitors to the park.
Other renovations to the park include: a new pedestrian bridge over the river, new basketball court, new children's playground, new futsal court, a new pool patio with open views of the river, and improved trails and river overlooks throughout the park.
Other amenities include an indoor pool, a sledding hill (in season), connections to the Oak Leaf Trail, the Kinnickinnic (KK) River Trail, and a soccer area.
The view of the park from the hilltop along Windlake Avenue, especially on a sunny spring afternoon, is brightly scenic. Sunshine reflecting on the water as the river moves along, leaves budding out on the trees, kids playing on the playground, and on the sport courts.
Walking the paved trails that traverse the park (about 1.2 miles) we spotted a Belted Kingfisher flying back and forth from tree to tree over the river, in search of fish, no doubt. A pair of Mallard ducks swam in the water. Red-wing Blackbirds and Song Sparrows called, too. If you're an urban birder, you're gonna wanna check this place out.
This is prime green space in the heart of the city. I'm looking forward to returning this summer when the wildflowers and trees are in full-bloom. I'm sure I won't be the only one.
