Robert O Cook Arboretum - Janesville, WI
The Robert O Cook Arboretum is 160 acres of lush beautiful trails for hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and birdwatching. We went in search of a Pileated Woodpecker, and actually saw it! Some of the trails are pretty steep, but manageable. The hike in is rewarded with stellar views along Marsh Creek. There are approximately 8 miles of trails within the preserve. The Ice Age Trail of Wisconsin intersects with it as well.
The Arboretum is managed by the Janesville Public School District, and is the site of the Janesville Schools Outdoor Laboratory. Many native trees, plants, birds, and wildlife can be viewed here. Along the trails we spotted Columbine blooms, Gray Catbirds, Indigo Buntings, Goldfinches, Eastern Bluebirds, House Wrens, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. This is definitely a great birding spot.
Picnic tables and benches are found throughout the preserve. Leashed pets are allowed from September 16 - May 14.
Location: 3550 W Co Hwy A - Janesville - WI, (Rock County)
