Wehmhoff Woodland Preserve - Burlington, WI
On a recent mild, sunny, winter Sunday, we took a drive to Burlington to explore the Wehmhoff Woodland Preserve. Worth the trip!
Though budding trees and early spring flowers are several weeks away, the woods were beautiful. The mile long (one way) trail can be steep and rocky at times, but is manageable with a good pair of walking shoes.
On this February day, we experienced our first butterfly sighting of the season, a flock of Sandhill Cranes flew over, and we even spotted our first Red-winged Blackbird of the year. The woodlands are sure to be a great birding site come spring migration. I plan to go back for the birds, the flowers, and more.
PS: if you take the time to visit Wehmhoff, be sure to reward yourself post-hike with Adrian's Frozen Custard. It's just minutes away on Bridge Street, and the custard is delicious!
Hours: Daily 5 am to 10 pm
Location: 3099 S. Honey Lake Road, Burlington, WI. (Racine/Walworth Counties)
