riverside cemetery - oshkosh, wi
I came across a few images taken at Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh, and was impressed by the beauty of the statuary and surrounding grounds. Located along the Fox River, Riverside was originally established in 1850, and is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Oshkosh. As of 2003, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On a recent trip to Oshkosh I decided to check it out.
On arrival I was impressed by it's park-like atmosphere. A canopy of tall, mature trees provide shelter to the 120 acre burial grounds. Dappled evening sunlight illuminated the rows of mausoleums and artful statuary scattered throughout. Walking paths traversed the grounds, intersecting with charming street name signs, and provided glimpses of the Fox River just beyond the edge of the trees. The Wiouwash State Trail passes through the cemetery, winding along the river on it's way toward River Mill Road.
The chapel at the main entrance to the cemetery was built in 1920, and holds two original paintings by local artist Gustav Behncke. Many notable Oshkosh residents are buried at Riverside. There are walking tours given of the cemetery and it's history and inhabitants in both spring and fall. Reservations are generally required. Check the cemetery Facebook page for details.
Like many parks and cemeteries, I noted lots of birds as I made my way through the grounds. A large group of Northern Flickers flew together from tree to tree, some stopping to sit on a roof of a mausoleum for a moment or two. Robins perched atop memorial stones, and Sparrow and Finch calls were evident. Located as it is along the river, I expect the cemetery is a wonderful bird watching spot during spring and fall migration. It was certainly a peaceful walk on an early summer evening. If I lived in the area I would definitely make a point to return, in every season.
