Bong State Recreation Area - Kansasville, WI
Okay, it has a kind of funny name, but it's actually named for Richard I. Bong, from Poplar, WI. He was America's leading air ace during World War II. We made our first visit early in summer. Aside from some mean mosquitoes in one wooded area, the park was breathtaking. Lush, filled with wildlife, great trails, beautiful vistas. It's known for great camping, and books up early. It's close, but make it a weekend trip.
