Greenfield Park - West Allis, WI
I live in West Allis, so Greenfield Park is a regular on my list. But it would be no matter what, as it has so much to offer. A beautiful lagoon to traverse around, enjoying songbirds, ducks, geese, and the occasional muskrat. There is a family of Blue Herons that have been nesting there the past couple summers. A thrill to watch over the course of the summer months.
There are also two other small ponds towards the south side of the park that are great spots for bird watching, and just relaxing under the shade of a tree. The wooded area has lots of trails, and there is a paved trail from the north side of the park to the south side of the park. Lots of picnic areas, and a water park that's open, obviously, in the summer months. The paved paths are groomed well in the winter months, and you'll find lots of walkers, runners, bicyclists, and nature lovers at this park. It's big enough that there is room for them all, but not so large you'll get lost.
Come fall Greenfield Park is a stunner. Between the woodlands and the trees surrounding the lagoon, the fall color is brilliant. And don't forget to check out the waterfall on the southeast side of the park, across from the lagoon. After a good rain, it's a lovely sight!
In recent years a prairie garden was cultivated on the south side of the lagoon. In summer, at the height of bloom, it is a stunning sight, abuzz with bees, butterflies, and birds visiting the wildflowers. Don't miss it!
