Saveland Park - Milwaukee, WI
One of the great things in the Milwaukee area is the number of neighborhood parks available to the local community. Saveland Park is one such park. Located on Milwaukee's southeast side, the park is just over 3 acres, but appears to be a hub for residents of the area. While we were there today, we said hello to several people walking their dogs through the park, and surrounding blocks. Kids were enjoying the mild weather of the day, climbing a very large, old tree by the pond, and enjoying the children's playground.
The small pond, surrounded by cattails, was mostly frozen today, but as we stood looking over it, we spotted a very energetic Kestrel flying loops above the treetops. I'm pretty sure that's my first Kestrel spotting within the city. It was amazing to see. The pond is stocked for fishing as well.
The walking paths, as well as the grounds, are lined with some magnificent trees, . Perfect for picnics in the summer shade, or an afternoon reading a good book. Sparrows, Chickadees and Juncos called from the branches, and in the cattails. A pair of hawks raced overhead as we walked. Something tells me this quaint little park is a good bird watching spot come spring.
In addition to the tot/lot and picnic tables, there is also a parks building on site (restrooms available seasonally), and a children's wading pool, for those hot summer days.
We walked around the pond, and the perimeter of the park, for a total distance of a third of a mile.
Parking is street-only parking.
Hours: Open daily, 6am - 10pm.
Location: 3700 S. 2nd Street, Milwaukee, WI (Milwaukee County)
