Chiwaukee Prairie - Pleasant Prairie, WI
Chiwaukee Prairie is nestled within both residential and commercial areas of Pleasant Prairie, within view of Lake Michigan. Although The Nature Conservancy has acquired 300-plus acres of Chiwaukee Prairie, this particular section represents a small portion of it.
Chiwaukee Prairie, as a whole, is home to more than 400 plant species, including 26 rare plants. It's a great birding spot, as more than 75 species of grassland and wetland birds have been observed on the prairie during breeding season. The Nature Conservancy manages a portion of this prairie, along with the Wisconsin DNR, and it is also a designated State Natural Area. Further developments and restoration are ongoing.
There is limited parking at the entrance near the conservancy kiosk. Walking trails are gravel, and traverse the prairie and surrounding area. It's short work to hike this particular trail (less than a mile), but definitely worth the effort.
