Ice Age Visitor Center Nature Trail and Vista Trail -
Campbellsport, WI
The Ice Age Visitor Center is a prime stop in the northern Kettle Moraine Forest. The center features a museum, provides nature programs and workshops, as well as information to visitors of the forest. The center itself is open from April through October.
However, there are two trails on the grounds worth taking at any time of the year.
The Nature Trail clocks in at just under a mile, but it's a wonderful little hike of hills, woodlands, wild birds, and blooming flowers and trees. When I visited this spring I was treated to a grand variety of migrating songbirds: Scarlet Tanagers, American Redstarts, Song Sparrows, and a Swainson's Thrush. Such beauty!
The Vista Trail is about a .25-mile trail up a lengthy (but manageable) flight of steps to a vista viewed from a wooden deck. The trail winds about in a short loop, then down another flight of stairs, and exits out the entrance to the Zillmer loop trails. The Zillmer loop trails consist of four looped trails for a total of 11 miles (trails to be explored another day...).
Both the Nature Trail and Vista Trail are family-friendly trails, taking little time to hike, but worth the effort. A visit to the center's museum, with a hike on either of these trails will yield a very pleasant afternoon.
