john muir memorial county park - town of buffalo, wi
Sometimes you just need a road trip. So, one drizzly July day, I decided to make the trip to John Muir Memorial County Park in Buffalo. The drive is just under two hours from Milwaukee. Though it was still rainy when I arrived, I managed to do some exploring of the land that once was the boyhood home of John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club and ardent naturalist. It seems fitting that Wisconsin was home to the man who became known as the "Father of the National Parks" - Wisconsin, with its miles and miles of beautiful woodlands, prairies, lakes, wetlands, and more. He was fond of the land he grew up on and would be pleased to see it preserved today for all to enjoy.
The 150 acre park features restored prairie, woodlands, and sedge meadow, all surrounding the 30-acre Ennis Lake. The lake itself is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. No motorized water vehicles are allowed, however. If you prefer to hike, there is a 1.7 mile featured segment of the Ice Age Trail that loops around the property and the lake with stunning views along the way. If you enjoy bird watching, the opportunities here will be plentiful.
There is a shelter for rent, and a restroom on site.
Fees: None
Hours: Open daily
Dogs permitted, on-leash.
Location: N1424 County Road F, Montello, WI (Marquette County)
