Konkel Park - Greenfield, WI
Konkel Park has been a recreational staple in Greenfield since it first opened in 1988/89 with two softball fields, lights, and a parking lot. Since that time, the hub of activity within the park has grown to include a children's playground, bike trail, exercise stations, a concession stand, bandstand, rental shelters, a gazebo, picnic area, and walking trails.
Beginning in 2019, a large restoration project was implemented to reduce flooding of Honey Creek and the surrounding area, improve habitat, and add additional gravel walking trails, boardwalk walking trails, and fishing piers. New native plants were introduced to revitalize the landscape, along with the planting of 700 trees, in an effort to provide habitat for birds, and other local wildlife. For the first time in many, many years, fish are swimming through the stream, and turtles sun themselves on rocks in the creek.
This spring I took my first walk in the new natural areas of the park, and I was thoroughly impressed. Fields of bright yellow wildflowers dotted the landscape, the trees were leafing out, and songbirds perched in the trees. I spoke to a fellow nature enthusiast as he walked the new trails, and he told me that he had already witnessed schools of fish in the flowing creek. A great sign of water improvement, one of the goals of the restoration.
The walking trails are beautifully laid out, easily walked, and some fully accessible. Beautiful views were visible in all directions, and will no doubt become even more appealing as time passes and the trees and wildflowers grow.
The park is also home to the Greenfield Farmer's Market, which is open on Sundays, from May to October (closed May 26th). Hours of the market are 10am - 2pm. A Makers Market is also featured the first Sunday of each month. Please note that dogs are not allowed into the Farmers Market.
