labyrinth garden earth sculpture - west bend, wi
I'm not sure why I hadn't heard about this labyrinth garden in West Bend before, but, thanks to a few posts on Instagram, I was introduced to it recently. I had to check it out. I'm so glad I did. It was a lovely and peaceful place to spend a sunny afternoon.
The garden is near the front (Main Street) entrance to Regner Park in West Bend, with parking near by. Led by local gardener Barbara Robertson, the labyrinth was first planted in 2005 by an all-volunteer team, and is still maintained by volunteers. The design is a traditional Cretan Labyrinth, and contains a single pathway that turns back on itself at least once before leading to the center. This pathway is 1/2 mile in and out.
The grass pathways are lined with plants in a striking variety of color and texture including bulbs, perennials, herbs and annuals. Butterfly favorites such as cone-flower are well represented, along with several types of lilies, poppies, cleome, blazing star, dahlias, daisies and more. There is plenty of weeding to be done here, and volunteers, often on-site, do an admirable job.
The garden features a wide variety of daylilies, and was designated a Daylily Display Garden in 2009 by the American Hemerocallis Society. You'll see them in just about every color.
Admission and parking are free, however, donations can be made. Celebration Stones and memorials can be purchased for placement in the garden as well. Visit www.westbendlabyrinth.org for more information.
