Lizard Mound County Park - Farmington, WI
Like many local school kids, I remember going to Lizard Mound County Park as part of a spring school field trip back in about 7th grade. I finally made it back again this spring. The prehistoric mounds remain, but there have been changes. Unfortunately, they lost a lot of trees due to disease, so the grounds are much more open. But, they have added an interpretive center with educational displays and signage, and audio exhibits that tell the story of the mounds. The mile-long walking trail weaves throughout the park, passing the linear, conical, lizard and bird shaped mounds. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and stands as the best preserved effigy mounds in the state of Wisconsin. Enjoy an afternoon in this historic spot. There are picnic areas available.
Please remember that walking on the mounds is prohibited, and it is illegal to disturb archaeological sites on county grounds without a permit.
