KOSCIUSZKO PARK - MILWAUKEE, WI
Kosciuszko Park is a 33.5 acre Milwaukee County park located on the southeast side of Milwaukee. The history of the park reaches back to 1890, when an initial 26 acres of wooded land, known as Coleman's Woods, was purchased from J.C. Coleman. It was then called Lincoln Avenue Park until 1905, when the statue of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish military leader in the U.S. War of Independence, was installed and the park was named after him.
The park features a pond, surrounded by a paved walking trail, various walking trails throughout the park, picnic spots, plenty of green space for kids to play, and a children's playground. Sports amenities include a basketball half-court, tennis courts, and a popular waterpark. The waterpark, known as Pelican Cove, features large and small waterslides that add that extra splash of fun in the pool.
The walking distance around the pond is .3 mi. There are park benches along the walking paths around the pond, and throughout the park. Plenty of seagulls, geese and ducks spend time in the pond. Grab a spot on one of the benches surrounding the pond and notice the view of the Basilica of Josephat across the street. The historic Basilica is worth a visit if you have the time.
The park has a popular community center as well. First opened in 1981, it features an indoor gymnasium/basketball court, boxing ring, and fitness center and weight rooms, including a women's only weight room. Indoor walking space is also available in the gymnasium. A day pass or membership is required to use the center facilities. A wide array of membership plans are available. A day pass is $5.
The center also has event and meeting rental space available. A variety of programs and special events are offered to the community throughout the year.
If birdwatching is your thing, the close proximity of the park to Lake Michigan and the migratory flyway should make for great urban birdwatching from spring to fall.
