Highland Woods - mequon, WI

Highland Woods is an 84-acre old growth mesic forest located in Mequon, and  a perfectly peaceful spot for a low-key nature hike. This birding hotspot features three interconnected walking trails that traverse the landscape, which is bordered by Cedarburg Road, Highland Road, and Green Bay Road.  The property was purchased in 1996, and is maintained by the City of Mequon.

I walked a combination of the three plotted trails for a total of just over a mile in distance. It's a comfortable walk, but stay alert for tree roots and old tree stumps as you follow the path.  Early autumn wildflowers like goldenrod and asters will keep you company along the way. Although it was pretty quiet in late afternoon, this preserve is a well-known wildlife corridor, and a popular bird watching area. 

There are a couple picnic benches near the parking lot, where you can just rest and enjoy the scenery, or dig into a good book. There is also an open prairie path trail on the north side of the preserve, which makes for an easy wander. 

With the wide variety of old hardwood trees, Highland Woods is sure to be a beautiful walk filled with fall color. Something to keep in mind as autumn descends.
