Hermansen Woods - Lake Geneva, WI
This 15-acre nature preserve off the shores of Lake Como was donated to the Geneva Lake Conservancy in 2000 by Al Hermansen. The property has been carefully restored to include native woodland habitat. Near the entrance is a native prairie garden, which was in full bloom the day I visited. The woodlands were alive with green, mosquitoes, and two winding walking trails.
Educational signs are placed along the walking trails throughout, detailing the different types of plants, trees, and wildlife native to the area. Two small streams wind through the property and feed into Lake Como at the bottom of the hill. The stream wasn't much more than a trickle when I crossed it. I expect it expands with a heavy rainfall.
There are signs indicating invasive poison ivy, so do use caution, and stay on the trails. Although there were a few downed trees along the trails, I was able to maneuver over them. The trails are simple, but there is a more pronounced incline on the return loop. The area is known for wildlife viewing - songbirds, turkey, deer, squirrels and fox being spotted here.
It's a lovely, peaceful spot for a short woodland hike. I've no doubt it looks stunning in autumn as well.
Hours: Open daily, sunrise to sunset
Parking: tiny parking lot, maybe two vehicles fit.
Dogs are permitted, but must remain on-leash.
Fees: None
Location: N2614 S. Como Road, Lake Geneva, WI (Walworth County)
