Heckrodt Wetland Reserve - Menasha, WI
Heckrodt Wetland Reserve has been on my list for such a long time. On a short weekend trip to Marinette, in search of fall color, I took the opportunity to take a break from the drive and get in a nature walk at the reserve. It was definitely worth the effort. I can see why it's a popular nature spot in the Appleton area.
The 91-acre nature preserve features just under three miles of walking trails. A majority of them easily accessible boardwalk. They wind through the reserves multiple habitats: upland forest, forested wetland, prairie meadow, and marsh. The nature center hosts a monthly birding club outing. Membership to the club is $10/year.
The 4,000 square foot nature center offers a wide array of exhibits that educate on the landscapes and wildlife found in the reserve.
They offer a selection of classes and programs for families, school and community groups as well.
Trail Hours: Daily, 6am-9pm
Nature Center Hours: Sunday and Monday: Closed; Tuesday-Friday: 8am-4:30pm; Saturday: 11am-4pm
Admission: Free, with donations accepted
Parking is available on-site
Pets are not allowed on the trails, however, uniformed assistance animals are welcome.
Bicycles are not allowed on the trails. Trails are for pedestrian traffic, strollers, and wheelchairs and motorized medical aids.
